Barn Find Oil Lamp - Perfect Restoration

It was pretty much exactly three weeks ago when I last visited my friend that works at the recycling station. He always takes interesting antique items at home and sells them on eBay, so he always has very cool old and rusty stuff to restore for me. Right at the moment when I first saw this oil lamp I knew I want to make a restoration video about it. He told me that must be a barn find because of the dirt that did stick to it. Not only because I liked its design, it was also very rusty and dirty and the glass was not broken. Well, it turned out later that it was indeed broken, but the crack was not visible and I realized that myself just after cleaning with the parts washer. I was shocked when I saw the huge crack, I wasn't even sure if I made it when disassembling or cleaning. So I checked all the recordings right away to see if the crack was already there before and I was quite reliefed when I saw that I didn't do it. I did a lot of research if it would be possible to repair it, unfortunately it's impossible to fix a crack in glass. Due to safety resons it's better to replace a cracked glass anyway, but I didn't had a replacement part nor could I make a new one. As I'm only using this oil lamp as a decoration piece I decided to try my best in secure the crack to not get bigger and try to hide it as good as possible. I think I achieved a nice result with that. The oil lamp was zinc plated originally and didn't had any paint on it. I can't zinc plate and didn't like the idea of such a rough finish. So I decided to paint it, at first I wanted to make it all black. I didn't really liked the idea of having it all black and I wanted to give it a second color to play with. After long thinking I remembered „Eleanor“ from the movie „gone in 60 seconds“. I really like that grey metallic look and it fits perfectly with black in my opinion. To give it a nice touch I painted the raised letters red.
I really like how this little Eleanor oil lamp turned out. I think the grey metallic body fits perfectly with the glossy black parts and the red letters „NEOLUX“ gives it a nice touch. With the nice repaired and cleaned glass this item turned into a very nice decoration piece and it makes me happy that I can show it off for display in my appartement from now on.

I hope you like my work and the video.

  • The exact sequence of me and this vid: Random recommendation. Pffffft. Stupid ILaward. Why would I want to watch some dumb old lamp get restored? It's pretty trashed. I wonder how it looks in the end. But how does he even get it apart? Guess I'll watch the first few minutes ... End of video. Liked. Subscribed. Edit: now going down a my mechanics rabbit hole ...

  • Wonderful…I still have several old kerosene lamps that I use for decoration only…love the look of this restored one, but still like my rusty ones too…🇦🇺

    • I can totally understand you. Thanks for watching :-)

  • you must be rich. your skill awesome

  • amazing skills no doubt, but a lot of this is over-restored for my tastes. I like to see some of the imperfection, age, and handmade qualities of the original.

  • Beautiful work!

  • Grosse Klasse !

  • Do you use dish soap on parts cleaner?

  • Excelent bro

  • Çok güzel oldu eskileri değerlendirme

  • Eu tenho uma dessa para ser restaurda

  • Xmdififjfi

  • Every one of your restorations are perfect, imho. But the hallmark of a perfectionist is having impossibly high standards. Excellent work and Thank you for your videos!

  • fantastic

  • Like the Primitive look before it was redone

  • Does anyone else get super worried he’s not going to test it? At the end of all his videos my lack of patience is complete exposed. Every. Single. Time.

  • Espectacular hermano!

  • That reminds me - I have to get my grandfather's 60+-year old Dietz lantern at our cottage going again. Didn't need a major restoration, just washing the glass and some new kerosene. Makes an OK light - good enough to see your way around, but not bright enough to read by.

  • Ngl I wasn’t a fan of the glass situation. That said, everything else was truly impressive as per usual. Beautiful work.

  • Beautiful ur is good nice I ❤ it good idea I love vintage goods use by our grandparents, how they pass their life n kept us to improve our life, thank u Bro,

  • Next time you need to repair glass, you can get some UV glue especially for glass, it's super easy to use.. it is a true delight to watch your work

  • find a local glass blower to make you a new glass piece

  • How could three thousand five hundred people not like this?

  • 👍👍👍👍👍👍👍👍👍👍👍👍👍👍👍👍👍👍👍👍👍👍👍👍👍👍👍👍👍👍👍👍👍👍👍

  • I'm pretty sure I have that exact one.. granted it's so far gone it's in pieces. The bottoms still good but the rest is gone..

    • Yeah these lamps were quite common back in the day

  • You know you can get replacement glass from Coleman lanterns. It be smart to have something for outages.

  • Excelente.

  • amazing job!

  • Not going to lie I’m jealous of your craftsmanship, and really jealous of the amount of tools at your disposal. 👍👍 great job.

  • Wow, absolute perfection!! Awesome job!! Greetings from South Africa!

  • Why paint the letters red after the clear coat and not before?

  • SUPER!

  • This is so cathartic. Subscribed.

  • When he said it was for looking at only, I was VERY concerned that he would not demonstrate the lantern at the end.

  • This is old or new?

  • How many paintgun do you have?

  • once I start watching your restoration I can not stop watching till you are done, it is amazing to see what a talented craftsmen you are , well done

  • Can't help but wonder what chemicals will off-gas from the liquid detergent used to clean the wick when it's burned. Fantastic skills over all.

  • Does anybody know the year of this lamp? I tried looking around but couldn't find anything.

  • 12:15 Mmm mmm, lamp porridge. My favorite!

  • This fellow really hates sharp edges

  • i don't know whether its just me, but I find sandblasting so satisfying 😁😁
